Belinda Cooper (Adjunct Assistant Professor at ISHR) was invited to Leipzig, Germany, to participate in celebrations of the 35th anniversary of a major demonstration there on October 9, 1989 that laid the groundwork for the fall of the Berlin Wall a month later. During her visit, she took part in a panel discussion on clandestine cooperation between West German journalists and East German activists, had an article about her published in a major regional newspaper, and attended an event with the German Chancellor and other prominent political figures.

Human Rights Research Award 2024 Now Accepting Applications

The ISHR Human Rights Research Award will provide students with an opportunity to gain valuable research experience, while supporting the work of Columbia faculty conducting human rights-related research. The research opportunities selected for the 2024-2025 academic year are enclosed (each opportunity includes distinct contact information for applying). Students who receive the Fellowship are expected to complete at least 80 hours of research assistance during the academic year.

HRSMA Alum Awarded Davis Fellowship

Daniil Alekseev, a recent graduate from the M.A. in Human Rights program, was awarded the Davis Fellowship. This fellowship is a merit award funded by a $10 million bequest from the late Kathryn Wasserman Davis, 1931 Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
2024 Human Rights Research Award

The Institute for the Study of Human Rights (ISHR) is inviting faculty to submit proposals for the Human Rights Research Award.
The Human Rights Research Award supports Columbia University faculty conducting research related to human rights and will provide students with an opportunity to gain valuable experience. In the 2024-2025 academic year, ISHR will award a limited number of research stipends to students in the amount of $1,500.
