Just before U.S. President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met at the White House on Wednesday, Ahval editor David Lepeska spoke with Columbia University’s David L. Phillips, a former senior adviser at the U.S. State Department, about the Turkish leader’s war crimes, Trump’s lack of character, and how the U.S. should begin to push for Erdogan’s ouster.

Dr. Helena Kane Finn is a former career diplomat of the Department of State who served as Minister-Counselor for Public Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Berlin; as Counselor for Public Affairs at the U.S. Embassies in Tel Aviv, Ankara, and Vienna; and as Acting Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, among other positions. Dr. Finn discussed the ways in which public and cultural diplomacy can be used in conflict situations to reduce tensions between opposing parties in the promotion of universal human rights.

Bárbara graduated in May 2018 with an MA in Human Rights Studies and was the recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship. Her studies focused on forced displacement and migration. Her thesis on Portugal’s role in the European Refugee Crisis was among the first in the North American academy tackling this research topic. During her time at Columbia University, she was also awarded the GSAS Fall Award for academic merit and served as teaching assistant to the Department of Political Science’s undergraduate class on the Introduction of Human Rights.

A Kurdish woman fled Turkish troops and their Islamist mercenaries when Turkey launched an unprovoked attack on the City of Afrin, a Kurdish community in northern Syria, on Jan. 20, 2018. The woman was running hand-in-hand with her young daughter when a missile obliterated the girl. The mother held onto her arm — all that was left of her child.
